Maria Curau – Bali’s Vegan Nail Spa

Well, here I am in Bali living the dream and eating at all the awesome vegan cafes when I discover the obsession with all things healthy has no limits here. I’ve found a vegan toxin-free nail spa that is all about earth friendly beauty and maximum relaxation. Jackpot! Maria Curau is a super cute nail spa and lifestyle store nestled amongst the beautiful rice paddies of Pererenan and it is a slice of cruelty-free heaven…

To start I think it is worth explaining why a vegan nail salon needs to exist. Some of you might be mistaken for thinking it is unnecessary or a fad. Far from it. Even if you are super new to veganism or clean beauty, you most likely could guess that most nail polishes are tested on animals. This isn’t so surprising, given that most beauty products involve huge animal cruelty to bunnies, dogs, rats etc. However, what if I told you that regular polishes often contain crushed beetles, fish scales and animal fat? Oh, and what about those epic gel manis that you love getting on a Friday lunchtime…? Well Shellac is actually beetle poo, for real! Shellac is made from the excretion of the Lac bug. Gross! Not to mention the rest of the toxins in nail polish…

Maria Curau - non-toxic

Now you can understand my happiness at discovering this holistic nail spa that the vegan gods have gifted us, I’ll carry on with the review…

The first thing you are greeted by is the epic location. Maria Curau is in Pererenan, a quick 5 minute scoot through the beautiful rice paddies from Canggu. Perfectly placed next door is the cafe Kinoa, a self confessed ‘Clean Eating Bar’. So for us health conscious peeps this location is bang on! These two are a great match for a healthy wholesome and luxurious pamper day.

Maria Curau - Lifestyle Shop Display

The first room of the salon has gorgeous lifestyle pieces and homeware. You can pick up gifts for friends, trinkets for yourself and pieces to decorate your home with. A great insider tip is that you can buy the most gorgeous soy candles from Maria Curau, and nice candles are really hard to find in Bali! You can thank me later expats 😉

Maria Curau - Lifestyle Shop

I picked up a cute headscarf for days when I fancy a more fun outfit, or just have bad hair! I love it – I feel playful and cute when I wear it. I wish I’d bought two now…

Maria Curau - Accessories

On arrival you are welcomed with smiles (of course, it is Bali!) and home made Kombucha. Dreamy!

Maria Curau - Kombucha Delivery

I visited Maria Curau on the recommendation of a friend who owns a big salon in the states, and she knows her stuff! This is guaranteed the best nail spa in Bali for service and attention to detail. The nail technicians are really expert, and take so much care to really prepare your nails for the paint. You know sometimes this part is rushed? Not here, your nails will look amazing before the polish has even been chosen!

Oh, and there is a tonne of choice for colour…

Maria Curau - Nail Polish Wall

One of the selling points of this salon is that it is non-toxic and cruelty free. All the polishes are from Kester Black, made with organic ingredients and perfect for us conscious consumers who prefer a more natural mani and pedi!

Back to the service… everything is luxurious and well thought out. Not only do you get a hand and arm massage, but you also get a head and neck massage whilst your nails are being prepared. It is realllllly heavenly and relaxing.

The team are really talented artists with an eye for design. A two second scroll on their Insta and you’ll see they are incredible at creating unique nail art designs – tropical, glam, edgy, intricate – they can do it all! I decided to go for a more simple design with fun colours, and a touch of metallic gold too.

Maria Curau - Toxin Free Nails

I loved my trip to Maria Curau, and am super thankful to my friend Sam for introducing me to this awesome nail spa! If you’re in the area, it is a must visit.

Maria Curau - Bali Nails Finished

If you’re feeling inspired to switch up your polish collection to toxin and cruelty free (I mean, why wouldn’t you?), here are some awesome brands I recommend…

For more cruelty-free and clean beauty, check out these posts. I’d love to see what nail art you get at Maria Curau so if you visit please tag me in your Insta photo @theveganedit – and if you are inspired to upgrade your polish collection let me know what you go for!

ZenUbud Villa – Bali’s Hidden Tropical Paradise

ZenUbud is next door to the Viceroy, which goes some way in helping explain how unbelievably incredible the location is.  The complex is made up of three villas all perched on the edge of the rice paddies, overlooking the lush green jungle.

Villa1 ZenUbud - The Vegan Edit

ZenUbud Villa - View of Pool - The Vegan Edit

Located just outside Ubud, you get to experience peace and tranquility that’s only a stone’s throw away from the bustle of Bali’s cultural heartland. The best of both worlds.

It’s easy to see why this place stole my heart…

ZenUbud Garden - The Vegan Edit

ZenUbud is pretty exclusive with only 3 villas, so it’s lovely and quiet; we didn’t need to share the pool at all during our 3-day stay.

ZenUbud Boutique Villas - Bali Infinity Pool - The Vegan Edit

ZenUbud Infinity Pool - Rosie - The Vegan Edit

This has to be one of the most gorgeous and affordable infinity pool views.  The same view 1/4 mile down the road at the Viceroy is £600+ per night!

Even the bathroom is incredible, open to the elements, with a view looking out across the valley.  Fitted with a rain shower, so that you can enjoy the view while you wash.  I can’t imagine any shower beating this one!

ZenUbud - Bathroom View - The Vegan Edit

You get a front row seat to mother nature’s best show, with loads of gorgeous tropical birds flying by.  One morning we spent a good half an hour laughing at a family of Monkeys playing in a tree over the way while we ate our breakfast.

ZenUbud Villa View - The Vegan Edit

Enjoying the sunset from the comfort of the infinity pool when we first arrived was a definite ‘pinch me’ moment. The villa staff even brought us down a welcome cocktail to enjoy while we made ourselves at home.

This place comes into it’s own in the evenings …

Imagine the crickets singing, the fireflies glowing, a sea of stars overhead, and the warm evening air all mingled with the smell of jungle flowers and incense. Truly magical.

Although we had a kitchen in our villa, and there are chefs on site that can cook for you, we decided to order a takeaway as we knew exactly what we wanted.  You can get the most incredible salads, the food is so amazing and fresh.  A great decision if I do say so myself…

We opted for trying Alchemy, an organic vegan café that was on our health cafe hit list.  ZenUbud is barely 15 minutes outside Ubud, so it wasn’t long before we were setting up for a feast!

Coconut Kefir - The Vegan Edit - Alchemy Cafe

How insanely cute are the takeaway boxes made out of banana leaf? Eco-friendly and adorable.  We chose to get a mixture of things to share; a juice, smoothie, coconut kefir, salad, budda bowl and raw chocolate dessert.

You can see from the photos that ZenUbud is the ultimate tropical paradise.

Unsurprisingly we decided to stay on an extra night here, as we couldn’t bear to leave.  Heaven on Earth!

If you’re ever visiting Ubud (which is a must fyi), then definitely stay at ZenUbud. The location, quality and affordability make it the ideal base from which to explore all the Balinese culture.

I’m looking forward to my next visit.

Yoga Searcher Bali

Bali is such a beautiful country, it’s pretty difficult to pick a favourite place, Uluwatu is definitely very high on my list though.  There are some incredible beaches, cafes, hotels and yoga centres – heaven for a health nut like me.  It was on the way to Uluwatu Temple that I first spotted the amazing Muz Kitchen restaurant at Yoga Searcher Bali as I whizzed past on a moped!  When I’m on holiday, the days are as much about discovering the best Vegan cafes as they are discovering the idyllic beaches.

Muz Kitchen is a must visit if you’re a serious foodie.  As usual with the best health food hangouts, the menu is awesome, offering everything from Acai Superfood Bowl’s to homemade Vegan Banana Bread.  Yoga Searcher pride themselves on offering fresh, organic, plant-based food – Earth friendly and cooked with love!

On my first visit to Muz Kitchen after a morning of yoga, I was pretty hungry and in the market for a breakfast feast.  Following much deliberation, I decided on the vegan Buckwheat Pancakes. It’s rare to find vegan pancakes so I absolutely have to try these whenever they’re on the menu! An extremely good decision…

Yoga Searcher Bali - Buckwheat Pancakes

The pancakes are d i v i n e!  The toppings consist of a perfect combination of caramelised banana, strawberry cardamom cream, pecans, and dried cranberries.

The smoothie pictured is called ‘Midnight Chocolate’, a lovely decadent mixture of blueberries, coconut, vanilla, cacao nibs and homemade almond milk.  The quality and freshness of the ingredients is just great – there’s nothing like local grown fruit and homemade dishes. I’ve got to say the food in Bali is the most fresh and delicious of anywhere I’ve been.Yoga Searcher Bali - Logo

I’ve got to confess that I ended up visiting Muz Kitchen twice in the same day… The food is so delicious and the venue so chilled, I couldn’t help myself.

At night the restaurant is completely transformed into a super cosy and tranquil space.

It’s always best to eat a light meal for dinner, so decided on this really tasty burger with a gluten free bun …

And naturally I had to finish off with the Apple Tart and Cashew Icecream 😉

If you’re planning a trip to Bali, make sure you stop off at Yoga Searcher in Uluwatu.  They have an Organic Spa, Yoga Retreat, gift shop and gorgeous boutique villa accomodation… as well as amazing food! What more could you want?

I’ll be visiting again later this year and I’m counting down the days…

Gilly T Bali: Kaleydo Villas and Pituq Vegan Cafe

Tropical Islands are what dreams are made of, especially when it’s one of the famous Gilly Islands.  The Gilly Islands are made up of three small idyllic islands off the coast of Lombok, and an hours ferry trip from mainland Bali, Indonesia. I spent a few days exploring Gilly T, the slightly larger and livelier island of the three. Here’s my take on the beautiful Kaleydo Villas and the delicious local vegan hangout Pituq Cafe…

This part of the Bali adventure was dedicated to Birthday celebrations for my best friend. We stayed at the suitably luxurious Kaleydo Villas, a hidden gem consisting of a small set of villas just off the main strip with the most friendly and helpful staff.  The pool is so inviting, as soon as you arrive you can’t help but leap in!

Kaleydo Villas Pool View

I took a million photos of this place, because I didn’t want to miss anything.  I had to keep pinching myself at how gorgeous and tranquil it was. Absolute Heaven! There really isn’t a leaf or petal out of place. I’m not even sure these photos fully do it justice, every little detail is perfect.

Kaleydo Villas Private Pool

Kaleydo Villas Breakfast

Our bathroom was gorgeous, with carved stone sinks, a rain shower and soft cozy towels. A welcoming luxury after a hot sticky day exploring island – the villa is your own private spa. It’s an amazing space to unwind and let stress melt away. Face masks at the ready!

Kaleydo Villas Luxury Bathroom

As Kaleydo Villas are just a couple of minutes ride from the main strip, the cycle down to morning Yoga is a breeze. There’s nothing quite like starting the day with some heart-opening Yoga in a tropical garden to get you feeling fabulous!

On Gilli T everyone explores the island by bike, as there are no cars, only horse and carts.  Theoretically, you cancycle around the island in half an hour. However, there are so many tempting views to photograph, juices to drink and massages to stop off for along the way that it easily becomes a chilled half day of exploring.

Gilly T Snorkelling

We cycled up to the North of the island in search of the best sites for snorkeling.  The coral, fish and ocean wildlife are mesmerizing. You can hire a snorkel and flippers from the local dive school for a very reasonable price.  Don’t forget to go mad on the suncream though…Bali sun is seriously fierce!

Pituq Cafe: Gilly’s best Vegan cuisine

As food obsessed travellers, we had done our research and knew exactly where we wanted to fuel up.  Our favourite place to fill up with amazing Vegan grub was Pituq Café, where the food, smoothies and juices were seriously delicious.  It is pretty difficult to find, but so worth the persistence.

Below is a photo of a delicious butternut squash, salad and tempeh wrap… plus an incredible dragon fruit smoothie in the background… foodie heaven!

Lunch at Pituq

We ate here at every opportunity and even got takeaway for our ferry journey back to the mainland, determined to try everything on the menu!

Lunch at Pituq day 2

As it happens Pituq Café is right around the corner from Kaleydo Villas, a match made in heaven.  We wound down after our action packed day by cooling off in the pool.  In the evenings, the stars are mesmerizing, a star gazer’s dream!

If Gilly T is on your bucket list, I’d recommend adding Pituq Cafe and Kaleydo Villas too.  I can safely say that I have never slept anywhere more relaxing, or been met with a more charming, hospitable welcome!

I honestly had the time of my life at this place!

For more Bali travel reviews keep an eye out , I’ll be posting some more soon…

Look at this beautiful precious baby! 💕 I could never eat you sweet one. Factory cows are artificially impregnated in order for their bodies to produce milk. Calves of dairy cows are separated from their mothers less than 24 hours after birth! While the mothers are taken away to be abused for their fresh supply of milk, their babies are either raised to eventually replace their mommas as dairy cows (if it's a female) or taken away to be slaughtered for veal (if it's a male). They cry in agony for their babies! Can you imagine being separated from your child almost immediately after they're born? Please consider this next time you are thinking of purchasing dairy. Vegan Tofu Scramble – 5 Minute Protein Breakfast

I bloody love breakfast. It is definitely my favourite meal of the day, I think it is because I’m such a morning person. Of course now I’m here in Bali I’ve been cramming in a lot of breakfasts! I’m SO spoilt for choice here it’s just ridiculous. Honestly, stay here for 3 days and you still won’t have finished the list of epic foodie spots I’d have for you to drool over! The last few months I’ve majored on the tropical fruits as its been pretty exciting to have these in abundance. But in the last few weeks I’ve switched it up, and to match my more intense gym routine I’ve been seeking a more protein rich spread. So this vegan tofu scramble has been the answer to my breakfast dreams.

Quick + Easy + Tasty + Protein Filled + Nutrient Dense = #BreakfastGoals This recipe is something you need in your life and it couldn’t be simpler! You can keep it lean and carb free, or go large and add toast too!

To make up for me spamming the gram with all these amazing foodie photos I’ve decided to start re-creating my favourites so you can make them yourself at home and bring a bit of the Bali sunshine to your cooking! I hope you like this idea and enjoy the recipes 🙂

Recipe Inspiration

In Canggu, Bali, I’ve been loving the delicious vegan tofu scramble dishes at Shady Shack and Vida Cafe. Naturally I’ve been sampling these thoroughly in preparation for this post… market research is the best 😉

Shady Shack’s Vegan Tofu Scramble

Shady Shack - Vegan Tofu Scramble - The Vegan Edit

Vida Cafe’s Vegan Tofu Scramble (+ Vegan BLT)

I really enjoyed making my own version of these at home. I did an epic organic food shop from Bali Jiwa so I was also able to use super fresh locally grown, organic, non-gmo tofu and veggies! Obviously I’ve been buzzing to eat this every day after the gym this week!

This super tasty vegan tofu scramble has become a staple breakfast of mine. Give it a try, I know you’ll love it!

Ingredients

220g (or half a standard sized block) Organic Firm Tofu (Organic is important as Soy can be GMO)
4 Organic Tomatoes (halved)
4 Handfuls of Organic Spinach
4 Handfuls of chopped Mushrooms
1 Grated Carrot
1 Grated Courgette
1 Cloves Garlic (finely chopped)
1/2 Tsp Smoked Paprika
1/2 Tsp Dried Herbs (Basil, Oregano etc)
1/4 Tsp Turmeric
6 Sticks of Asparagus (if in season)
Salt & Pepper to season
Coconut Oil or refined Olive Oil for the cooking

Method

Start by mashing up the tofu in a bowl and mixing in the grated carrot, grated courgette,  herbs, spices and half the chopped garlic.

I prefer to cook this in two pans, to keep the scrambled tofu separate from the rest of the ingredients. It’s a little easier this way! Add a little drizzle of oil into each pan and put both on a low-medium heat.

Pan 1
Sautee 1/2 chopped garlic clove with the mushrooms, asparagus and tomatoes for roughly 3 minutes, then when they have softened add in the spinach on top for the final minutes of cooking. The steam and heat from the pan will cook it very quickly. Add a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

You can choose to keep the ingredient separate in the pan or mix them all together, your preference. You’ll see I have examples of both in the photos 🙂

Pan 2
Transfer the bowl with tofu etc into the second pan, and sauté for 3-4 minutes. I sometimes add a splash of Tamari/Soy sauce too. t doesn’t take long to cook at all, and some of the tofu will start to brown slightly when it is ready.

Serve immediately with a dollop or hummus, a squirt of ketchup or your favourite condiment. This dish is great as it is nutrient dense and a super healthy meal to start the day with. It’s pretty filling, but if you are after a mega breakfast then you could add a few slices of sourdough toast.

Vegan Tofu Scramble 2 - The Vegan Edit Notes + Variations for if you’re feeling #Extra

-If you like things hot, you could add some Mexican vibes by adding a side of avocado, dollop of refried beans, red peppers and you could also add a sprinkle of chilli powder into the scramble mix.
-Those Italian fans could add fresh basil, vegan pesto, nutritional yeast and a drizzle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil on the top to serve.
